How ProteinMath works
ProteinMath is a tool for comparing protein powder products based on price, protein content, and other metrics. The goal is to provide a straightforward way to evaluate the cost-effectiveness of different protein powders using up-to-date data.
Most people (us included) use protein powders to increase their share of protein in their daily macros. For us our single largest part of our supplement spending is protein powder and the price has been on an up trend for the past few years.
The most relevant metric for a protein powder (all else equal) is how much you pay per gram of protein . Yet even websites like Amazon list metrics that are not really relevant such as price / ounce or price / serving while what we are after is really grams of protein. We could not find a comparison tool that made this easy and updating a spreadsheet is too tedious, so we built ProteinMath to do it for us.
The main comparison metric is price per gram of protein . This is calculated as:
Price per gram = Total Price รท (Number of Servings ร Protein per Serving)
This approach allows users to compare products regardless of container size or serving size. Additional metrics, such as total protein content, vegan or diary, are also provided for reference.
Product and pricing data are collected from Amazon. The database is updated regularly to reflect current prices and product details. Only products with complete and verifiable information are included.
The database currently covers most popular brands we are aware of on Amazon, and covers a range of protein powder types. As we build out the database further we plan to include:
